Event Overview

Despite the enormous effort by many of Kentucky’s stakeholders over the last two decades to address obesity, rates have risen from 13% in 1990 to 34% in 2016. Employers have spent billions on wellness initiatives, yet few feel their investment has produced results. Join the KHC’s Community Forum to learn about obesity facts, treatment options, benefits coverage, and paths forward.

Our Guest Speaker

Andrew Brown, PhD

Dr. Brown, Assistant Professor of Indiana University’s School of Public Health, will discuss how the many perceptions about the causes and cures for obesity are explicitly or deceptively overly simplistic, leading to common myths and presumptions about obesity.

He will then discuss more complex, successful strategies, including intensive lifestyle interventions, pharmaceutical treatment, and surgery. Treating obesity seriously, instead of simply, is consistent with evidence-based practice, acknowledgment of the beautiful complexity of biology, and respect for persons with obesity.
