The Staggering Impact of Depression on a Com
pany's Bottom Line and Resources for Employers to
Tackle This Growing Health Challenge
Unb
eknownst to many employers\, the shocking ONE IN 10 Americans living with
depression goes beyond the personal realm to significantly impact the bott
om line of companies from every sector\, ultimately costing employers BILL
IONS OF DOLLARS ($102B) each year. By 2030\, depression is expected to be
the NUMBER ONE contributor to the worldwide burden of disease. Yet\, despi
te treatment advances\, ONLY ONE-THIRD of people with diagnosable mental h
ealth conditions seek care\, which directly increases the cost for employe
rs through decreased productivity\, presenteeism
(being at work\, but not engaged/productive) and absenteeism (days away f
rom work).

Join the Kentuckian
a Health Collaborative on Thursday\, April 20 for an interactive se
ssion with Marcus Miles\, Employers Health and Clare Miller\, Workplace Me
ntal Health. Employers are in a powerful position to help decrease the sti
gma and increase help-seeking behaviors for their employees with depressio
n. This session will cover the ways in which DEPRESSION MANIFESTS itself i
n the workplace (what it looks like to employers/coworkers)\, address BARR
IERS to confronting this growing issue\, and most importantly\, introduce
a FREE solution to the problem: Right Direction www.rightdirectionforme.com\, a FREE\, first-of-it
s-kind RESOURCE that employers (including Zappos\, one of the world's larg
est online shoe stores) have effectively used to tackle depression in the
workplace. Right Direction works to maximize existing EAPs to promote earl
y recognition of symptoms and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness
\, while also providing employers with a multitude of turn-key tools that
can be customized to communicate with employees about depression\, the sym
ptoms\, its effects on personal and work life\, available resources to hel
p employees and more.

A
recent survey (Impact of Depression at Work Audit (IDeA
) shows that nearly 40 PERCENT of survey participants with depressi
on reported taking an average of 10 DAYS OFF of work a year as a result of
their diagnosis. In total\, depression is estimated to cause 200 MILLION
LOST WORKDAYS EACH YEAR and\, no matter the field of work\, these findings
demonstrate a significant impact on employee performance and productivity
. Respondents noted cognitive challenges had the most impact on their abil
ity to work\, defined as difficulty concentrating\, indecisiveness and/or
forgetfulness.
 \;
For businesses to thrive\, it's important
that employers learn more about how to spot depression in the workplace\,
such as:
·\; \;Missed deadlines and work days
·\; \;
&m
iddot\; \;Poor rel
ationship with coworkers
 \;
While many employers seek to address depressi
on in the workplace through an employee assistance program (EAP)\, there i
s a LACK OF RESOURCES AND KNOWLEDGE AVAILABLE to empower employees living
with the disease to seek help\, which only exacerbates this growing issue.
In fact\, according to IDeA survey results\, 35
PERCENT of managers surveyed revealed they receive no formal support or r
esources to guide people with depression.
