Event Overview

Unbeknownst to many employers, the shocking one in 10 Americans living with depression goes beyond the personal realm to significantly impact the bottom line of companies from every sector, ultimately costing employers billions of dollars ($102B) each year. By 2030, depression is expected to be the biggest contributor to the worldwide burden of disease. Yet, despite treatment advances, only one-third of people with diagnosable mental health conditions seek care, which directly increases the cost for employers through decreased productivity, presenteeism (being at work, but not engaged/productive) and absenteeism (days away from work).

Join the Kentuckiana Health Collaborative on Thursday, April 20 for an interactive session on mental health in the workplace with Marcus Miles, Employers Health, and Clare Miller, American Psychiatric Association Foundation. Employers are in a powerful position to help decrease the stigma and increase help-seeking behaviors for their employees with depression. This session will cover the ways in which depression manifests itself in the workplace (what it looks like to employers/coworkers), address barriers to confronting this growing issue, and most importantly, introduce a free solution to the problem: Right Direction, a free, first-of-its-kind resource that employers (including Zappos, one of the world’s largest online shoe stores) have effectively used to tackle depression in the workplace. Right Direction works to maximize existing Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) to promote early recognition of symptoms and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, while also providing employers with a multitude of turn-key tools that can be customized to communicate with employees about depression, the symptoms, its effects on personal and work life, available resources to help employees and more.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the burden of depression in the workplace and ways it affects performance/productivity.
  • Learn insights into the barriers of addressing depression, including stigma and lack of resources available.
  • Learn about free tools available to utilize in better supporting the mental health and productivity of their workforce.
  • Hear case studies to provide an overview of successful implementation of the Right Direction initiative.
